Avengers: Infinity War promises to be a culmination of everything the Marvel Cinematic Universe has built up towards since its inception and as such, will involve more superheroes than any previous installment in the franchise. This includes characters that have previously been relatively isolated, such as those in Guardians of the Galaxy - who have thus far been off in their own adventures in space, with only the ongoing threat of Thanos and the Infinity Stones tying them to events in the MCU version of Earth.
Nebula’s involvement with Infinity War has already been confirmed, alongside her Guardians compatriots Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax and Rocket. The former Doctor Who actress who plays Nebula, Karen Gillan, tweeted a picture from her first day of filming, confirming to fans she would be suiting up for the forthcoming Marvel extravaganza.
In a new tweet posted earlier today (February 23rd), Gillan updated Avengers fans, claiming she was taking a break from the editing process on her forthcoming debut directorial feature - Tupperware Party - to return to the land of Marvel and film additional scenes as Nebula. And it seems as if the Scottish actress won’t have to venture too far either, as according to Atlanta Filming, the production is heading to her native country to shoot scenes in Edinburgh and Glasgow:
Taking a break from editing Tupperware Party to get back into blue. Nebula is back! #AvengersInfinityWar #tupperwarepartymovie— Karen Gillan (@karengillan) February 23, 2017
It is currently unknown whether the timing of Gillan returning to Avengers duty coinciding with the production moving to her native country is merely a coincidence or whether the Russo brothers are making use of their new filming location to shoot some of Gillan’s scenes, for the sake of convenience. Either way, Guardians of the Galaxy fans will be delighted that the popular blue bad-ass will soon be making another appearance in the wider world of the MCU.
The big question surrounding Nebula’s involvement in Avengers: Infinity War, is what side the character will be fighting for. In the first Guardians movie, Nebula was seemingly loyal to her adoptive father Thanos and one of his most trusted fighters - until she turned against him and united with Ronan the Accuser, instead. Based on the trailers and promotional material for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Nebula will be joining the expanded Guardians team in the sequel at some point, along with Yondu and Mantis. This indicates that Infinity War should see Gillan’s character fighting against Thanos, in what could be a very significant and emotional storyline.
With that said, many are beginning to wonder whether Avengers: Infinity War is over-reaching itself in terms of the amount of characters involved. Despite moving from a two-movie story to a single feature, the cast list keeps on expanding with big name actors playing popular characters - and while on one hand this is very exciting, critics and fellow directors are beginning to wonder whether the movie will be able to do justice to all the figures involved.
