Avengers: Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely pick Thor’s Wakandan entrance as the shot they knew would always be part of the movie’s final cut. Boarding the MCU in 2008, the writing partners were initially tapped to pen Captain America: The First Avenger, but they have since then gone on to write four more movies in the franchise - the last two Captain America sequels, Avengers 3, as well as next year’s Avengers 4.
Teaming up with directors Joe and Anthony for the third time, Markus and McFeely worked on the story of Infinity War as early as 2015 - when Captain America: Civil War was still in principal photography, and films like Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther hadn’t released yet. Despite this, the writing partners have always been certain that they wanted to see Thor, alongside Groot and Rocket, make a grand entrance in Wakanda in the movie.
Appearing on Kevin Smith’s Fatman on Batman on YouTube, the Avengers: Infinity War writers answered several questions about their stint with Marvel Studios. While the show didn’t dive into what lies ahead for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in next year’s Avengers 4, the discussion mainly focused on Avengers 3, particularly the thought process that went into creating Marvel’s culminating film. When asked about the scene in the movie that they knew was always going to be in the final cut, the two were in unison in saying that it was Thor, Groot, and Rocket’s entrance in Wakanda “because the whole thing is built off of that.”
To some degree, Thor’s arrival in Wakanda can be viewed as his resurrection. Bruce has presumed that Odinson was gone following Thanos and the Black Order’s ambush of the Asgardian ship. While the film didn’t show him telling Cap and the rest of team in Wakanda about that bit, he’s previously told Tony about it in the Sanctum Sanctorum. It’s also the closest fans got to an original Avengers reunion - something that hasn’t been seen on the big screen since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. So, while the moment was glorious for fans, and a scene made better by Alan Silvestri’s music, there was more to it than just being a cool shot.
Speaking of an original Avengers reunion, Avengers: Infinity War may have deprived fans of the joy of seeing the founding members of MCU’s premiere superhero team together - whereas most of the heroes convened in Wakanda, Tony was with Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and some of the Guardians on Titan, while Hawkeye was on house arrest following the events of Civil War - but the end of Avengers 3 was most definitely a set-up for a major re-assembling in Avengers 4. That’s when they learn to become “a true team together,” as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased. With most of the newer heroes snuffed out of existence after Thanos’ snap, the fate of the universe now lies in the hands of the franchise’s pioneering six heroes with the help of Ant-Man and Captain Marvel.
