Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo reveal they don’t know when Marvel Studios will release the Phase 3 capper’s first trailer. Avengers: Infinity War released less than two weeks ago, but fans are already looking forward to its followup, the still-untitled fourth Avengers film. Considering the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War, though, it’s fair to assume fans are eagerly anticipating how the story will continue on. Plus, Avengers 4 is set to be the final chapter of not only Phase 3, but the entire story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far.
With that said, Avengers 4 will no doubt be the most secretive project released by Marvel Studios - and that’s saying something since even a typical Marvel film has a number of safeguards to protect fans from leaked information. As such, fans can expect Marvel Studios to pull out all the stops in terms of preventing spoilers, and one of those efforts may be withholding a trailer for Avengers 4 for a while. Certainly, fans had to endure a long wait for the Infinity War trailer likely due to spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok. In fact, as of now, the directors don’t know when a trailer for Avengers 4 will arrive.
Coming off the success of Avengers: Infinity War, directors Anthony and Joe Russo are already being asked about the film’s followup. In an interview with ComicBook, the filmmakers were asked when a trailer for Avengers 4 may be released. Joe Russo responded, “No idea. We haven’t cut any of the film together yet. We’ll have to see. We’ll get it set for the next two or three months.” Anthony Russo went into further detail, though he still didn’t offer a concrete timeframe:
It’s not entirely surprising that the Russos don’t know when the first Avengers 4 trailer will drop. The first teaser trailer for Avengers: Infinity War didn’t drop until late November, after all. Avengers 4 doesn’t have a similar situation as Infinity War attempting to avoid Ragnarok spoilers, but it will no doubt try to avoid ruining the ending of Infinity War. The two Marvel movies set to release before Avengers 4, Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp, are expected to take place prior to - or, in the case of the latter, potentially during - the events of Infinity War. As such, it’s unlikely an Avengers 4 trailer would spoil them.
Joe and I always talk about it, there’s this filmmaking adage that goes, ‘You make a movie three times over: When you write it, when you shoot it, and when you edit it.’ And so, right now, we have not edited that movie at all. So we haven’t even gone through that whole phase of finding that film. Not only that, we haven’t even completely finished shooting it. We still have to shoot some stuff to complete the movie and even though we’ve shot the vast majority of it.
With that said, the main factor contributing to when an Avengers 4 trailer will be released is how long it takes the Russos to edit the film. As we recently learned, the cast is expected to return for reshoots later this year, possibly as late as December. While a trailer will likely release before then, the initial teaser may feature shots not included in the final cut of Avengers 4 - whether because they’re eventually taken out of the movie or because they were created specifically for the trailer. So, fans can look forward to and speculate about the Avengers 4 trailer, but it won’t arrive for some time.
