Joe and Anthony Russo reveal the closest Avengers 4 title guess they’ve heard thus far. Originally a two-parter, Marvel Studios eventually decided to split the twin Avengers sequels. And while the third installment of the sub-franchise retained the Infinity War tag, the Phase 3 capper remains untitled as of now, becoming a fan-favorite topic of discussion. Many initially presumed the reason the company is holding back the announcement of the title is because it may be a spoiler for its predecessor, but that may not be the case.
Despite this, Marvel Studios is maintaining its stance about not releasing the title any time soon. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained that they want people to sit on what just happened in Avengers: Infinity War instead of looking ahead to what’s happening next. However, fans can’t be stopped from speculating, especially with the way the latest Marvel flick left its heroes. Given this, the duo provided somewhat of a clue as to what the much-speculated title of Avengers 4 will be.
Speaking with ComicBook on the heels of Infinity War’s success, the Russo brothers revealed Avengers: Forever is the closest Avengers 4 guess they’ve heard thus far, prompting Joe to jokingly say “The actual title is The Avengers: Almost Forever.” He then added: “I don’t think there are any comics that correlate to it. I think we’re in pretty fresh territory with Avengers 4. If anything, I think it’s interesting after to go back and look at some of the Marvel films and view them through a different lens. But I can’t think of any comics in particular that would have value.” This seems to be some advice to people who might be basing their speculations solely on the comics to offer insight since, while they’re using a comic book narrative as inspiration, they had the creative liberty to craft their own story.
Further illustrating his point, Joe cited 2008’s Iron Man directed by Jon Favreau as the template they’re following when it comes to balancing their film’s narrative in a way that it feels loyal to the source material but not limited to it.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously admitted that their decision to withhold the title has backfired for them, seeing the built-up anticipation for it now. For a while, Infinity Gauntlet was among the most popular guesses out there pertaining to the armored glove that Thanos forced Eitri to create so he’s able to wield all six Infinity Stones at once. Considering the reveal of its backstory and state of the gauntlet by the end of Infinity War, it made sense that it’ll be the central McGuffin for Avengers 4, but the MCU mastermind already shot down the theory. With the Russos’ latest reveal, fans can now go back to their drawing boards and come up with new theories (not that the clue is very helpful).
“Our job as we said a million times is to tell the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not to do direct adaptations of the comics because we’re comic book fans. I have no interest as a director in telling a story that’s already been told or in seeing one that’s already been told. If I know all the events story as they’re going to happen then what’s the point of going to the film? We want to keep surprising audiences and continue the story that started with Iron Man One a decade ago.”
