Avengers: Endgame marketing may only reveal footage from the first 20 minutes of the film, said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Dubbed as the most-anticipated flick of 2019 by Fandango, the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed project will wrap up the MCU’s 22-film narrative that the franchise has been treading since 2008’s Iron Man.
After much clamor and fan commotion, the first trailer of Endgame finally arrived early last month alongside the confirmation of its long-debated title. With Captain Marvel still first in the MCU docket before Avengers 4, marketing efforts are currently still focused on the Brie Larson-led movie. That said, Endgame understandably remains Marvel fans’ favorite topic of conversation as everyone awaits for any official update regarding the film.
Catching up with MTV at the Golden Globes red carpet, Feige was asked about an ongoing rumor that they’re only planning to use footage only from the first 15 to 20 minutes of Endgame in their marketing campaign. A master at dodging tricky questions, the producer extraordinaire basically gave a non-answer by replying that the said claim is “somewhat accurate.” He then proceeded to say that he’s confident that Disney’s marketing team will be able to promote the much-anticipated flick the most effective way possible.
For comparison, the Avengers: Infinity War trailer included one of the last scenes of Tony Stark on Titan shortly after Peter Parker disintegrated into dust in his arms. But since at that point, the scene had no context, no one actually thought of the gravitas of that said moment in the movie. Marvel Studios is also known for using CGI in key shots from the film used in promo footage to conceal certain details. Case in point: Spider-Man in Team Iron Man’s and Team Cap’s airport face-off in Captain America: Civil War and even removing some of the stones in the Infinity Gauntlet, giving fans the impression that Thanos still had a long way to complete his mission. Endgame can very well use these tactics to show shots from all over the movie without giving any massive spoiler away.
On the flip side, it’s important to note that with so little known about Avengers: Endgame, there’s really not much Marvel Studios can put in their trailers that wouldn’t reveal something significant in the film. It’s understandable that Feige and his team go to such far lengths to ensure that the narrative of the MCU’s culminating film is tightly under wraps before it officially hits theaters. While it’s possible that the Marvel Studios president just said it to fend off the public from correctly predicting the movie’s storyline (after all, he gave a very safe answer), at this point, people are already going to see the movie anyway especially given the number of people that watched Infinity War last year.
