We still don’t know what the actual title of Avengers 4 is, but we do know several things it isn’t. Back when Marvel Studios officially announced their Phase 3 slate, the film was known as Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2. Plans changed, though, and that title was soon dropped. Marvel has so far refused to reveal the actual title, with Kevin Feige suggesting that it would serve as some kind of spoiler.

Beyond that, Marvel’s sending mixed messages. On the one hand, Feige has suggested the decision not to reveal the title has “sort of backfired.” Clearly frustrated with all the speculation, he’s cautioned that Marvel has “no chance to living up to any expectations of what it’s gonna be.” On the other hand, though, the Russo brothers still seem to be enjoying teasing viewers with potential spoilers. Co-director Anthony Russo recently revealed that Marvel chose the film’s name fairly early on during production. “It speaks to the heart of the story,” he explained, in what’s possibly the biggest hint to date.

Marvel may not have officially announced the title, but that doesn’t mean they’ve said nothing about it. The Russos, in particular, have shot down a lot of popular fan-theories, driving the Internet wild with speculation. So here, we’re going to look at the potential titles that have been ruled out by Marvel.

Infinity Gauntlet

There have been recent rumors that Avengers 4 was originally titled Infinity Gauntlet during production. That may explain why, in April 2017, Zoe Saldana absent-mindedly referred to the film as “Infinity Gauntlet”/ James Gunn swiftly dismissed that theory, stating that he thought “Zoe just misspoke.” The potential title remained popular among fans, though, something Feige Feige reaffirmed when he said, “That is definitely not what it is called”. Whether it was actually referred to as such on set is unknown.

This Is Unlikely To Be A Comic Book Title

Avengers: Infinity War ended with the famous “snap” scene, lifted from Jim Starlin’s classic Infinity Gauntlet miniseries. As a result, astute viewers have turned to the comics to propose other variants; Infinity Crusade, Infinity Abyss, and even Infinity Entity. But, while Marvel hasn’t officially commented on any of these titles, they’re all unlikely. The Russos have insisted that Avengers 4 is actually an original story, with Joe Russo going so far as to state, “I don’t think there are any comics that correlate to it. I think we’re in pretty fresh territory with Avengers 4.”

Avengers: Endgame

“We’re in the endgame now,” Doctor Strange declared towards the close of Avengers: Infinity War. After viewing millions of different futures, Stephen Strange handed over the Time Stone rather than allow Tony Stark to be killed by the Mad Titan. That’s led most viewers to believe that Stark is crucial to putting right what Thanos has done - and that Strange’s “endgame” is the post-“snap” reality.

If that’s the case, wouldn’t it be logical to give Avengers 4 the title Avengers: Endgame? Testing the waters for this theory, Uproxx asked the Russos whether or not the title was spoken in Infinity War. Joe Russo gave a simple answer; “No.” Anthony Russo decided to offer another enigmatic comment; “It’s certainly grounded in the narrative that we have been following throughout the MCU – very well grounded…”

It’s unclear what exactly Anthony Russo meant, but one thing’s for sure; we can rule out Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Forever

The Russo brothers revealed that Avengers: Forever is the closest anyone’s yet come to the title. “The actual title is The Avengers: Almost Forever,” Joe Russo quipped. That does mean we can rule Avengers: Forever out - that was the title of a ’90s comic book miniseries involving time-travel and seemed to match up with the little we know about Avengers 4.

Avengers: Eternity

The Russos’ comments led fans to speculate that the film could actually be called Avengers: Eternity. That suggestion proved extremely popular, not least because it suggested cosmic beings - such as Marvel’s Eternity - could actually play a part in Avengers 4. Collider’s Steven Weintraub reached out to sources at Marvel, and tweeted that Eternity is “def NOT the title.” Of course, that comment doesn’t mean the cosmic beings can’t appear in the film!
