Joss Whedon, director of The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, has officially posted his reaction to Avengers: Endgame. The latest Avengers movie is already seeing unprecedented success, grossing 1.2 billion worldwide in its opening weekend alone.
Whedon’s treatment of the team dynamic in the original Avengers movie was met with widespread acclaim. Age of Ultron was also well received, though to a lesser extent. Some fans were surprised when Whedon announced his exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Ultron. Whedon didn’t leave on bad terms, and has talked positively about other Marvel films, calling Thor: Ragnarok a “masterpiece.” The Russo Brothers of Captain America: The Winter Soldier fame took over Avengers duties, directing Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. The Russos currently have no plans to return to the MCU after Endgame, however.
Whedon took to Twitter to post his reaction to Endgame. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator only posted a few words, but they were clear in showing his praise for the blockbuster.
Whedon’s reaction is similar to how many viewers felt. Endgame is the culmination of 11 years of films, and is packed with emotional content. One viewer reportedly had to be hospitalized due to uncontrollable crying during the film. Although a dangerous incident (the viewer is reportedly okay), this shows how dedicated many fans are to the MCU and its cast of characters. Truly, one would be hard-pressed to find an audience not cheering when Endgame’s final battle commences, and shedding tears over how the conflict ends. Of course, Endgame is also packed with humor, ensuring audiences will be laughing along the way to the credits.
Endgame has been acclaimed by fans and critics alike. The film serves as a conclusion to 21 prior movies, from 2008’s Iron Man, to 2019’s Captain Marvel. However, Endgame also sets up a number of future stories, including new developments for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and the shows on Disney+. Simply put, Endgame is a massive cinematic event, an end, but also a new beginning. Its emotional impact and handling of the characters (some on the controversial side) will be a talking point for the rest of 2019. As for what Whedon is currently working on, the Firefly creator is doing a sci-fi show for HBO titled The Nevers. Meanwhile, fans of the Russo Brothers can watch 21 Bridges in July, which stars Chadwick Boseman of Black Panther fame.
