An adorable new BTS photo from the set of Avengers: Endgame features a smiling Robert Downey Jr. posing alongside his onscreen daughter Lexi Rabe. It’s been a little over six weeks since Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster, the ending to the grand Infinity Saga, hit theaters. While several other big films have released since, it’s safe to say that Avengers: Endgame won’t cease being a topic of conversation among fans for a long time to come.
While Avengers: Endgame hasn’t yet managed to cross the finish line and pass James Cameron’s Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide - although it may still do so, as it’s close, and Endgame is still in theaters - the penultimate Phase 3 film of the MCU is by all measures a massive success. Endgame has earned widespread critical acclaim, the love of most Marvel fans, and over $2.7 billion at the box office. A big part of that success is no doubt due to Robert Downey Jr.’s performance as Iron Man/Tony Stark, the MCU’s original hero.
Back when Marvel Studios first launched in 2008, those involved were by no means sure their plan to create a shared superhero universe would work. Thankfully, Downey’s initial turn as Iron Man was meant with applause and big profits, and Marvel Studios hasn’t looked back since. Sadly, Avengers: Endgame brought Tony Stark’s journey to an end, but thankfully, Robert Downey Jr. is still very much alive. For proof, one need only look at the BTS photo recently shared by the Instagram account of young actress Lexi Rabe, who played Tony’s daughter Morgan Stark. The shot features a widely grinning RDJ sharing a hug with his onscreen offspring. Check it out below.
Downey sure looks happy in the above photo, as does Rabe, who made her first film appearance in Avengers: Endgame, but has since appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Despite her young age, Rabe’s onscreen rapport with Downey impressed many fans, who found their fictional father-daughter bond very believable. This of course only made the fact that Tony Stark ultimately sacrificed his life to save the world, and thus won’t be there to watch his little girl grow up, all the more heartbreaking. Many fans are suggesting RDJ for an Oscar nomination, and based solely on strength of performance, it’s hard to see why he shouldn’t be seriously considered.
As most fans are likely aware of by now, Tony was actually originally planned to share one last moment with his daughter Morgan after using the Infinity Gauntlet to defeat Thanos. A scene was shot of Tony encountering a teenage version of Morgan, played by 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford, in Soul World, similar to how Thanos saw a young Gamora when he did his snap. Hopefully this deleted sequence makes its way onto the Avengers: Endgame Blu-ray release.
