The directors of Avengers: Endgame have officially confirmed the final runtime, and it is over 3 hours, as many expected. The lead up to the end of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe technically began all the way back in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, but it was really the devastating ending of Avengers: Infinity War that left audiences eager to find out what happens next, as made clear by the mayhem over the ticket presales.

Thanos wiped out half of the universe’s population with the snap of his fingers, leaving the original six Avengers and a few friends to try and put the universe back together. Marvel Studios has been especially protective over any and all details pertaining to Avengers: Endgame, and even what they have shown still has left fans just guessing what it could mean (or if any of the footage is real). With so much secrecy over the conclusion of an eleven-year story, one of the burning questions has been the runtime of Avengers: Endgame. Co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo have long been teasing that a 3 hour runtime was possible, but now it is official.

The Russo brothers recently spoke to Comicbook and confirmed that the final runtime for Avengers: Endgame is 3 hours and 58 seconds. This news comes after tickets went on sale that listed the movie at 3 hours and 2 minutes long. So what changed? Well, there was no scene cut at the last second, with Joe revealing that they “just sped up the credits” to result in the slightly shorter length. This confirmation officially makes Avengers: Endgame the longest MCU movie yet.

It is hardly surprising that the Russos hit the 3-hour mark on Avengers: Endgame as that is the length they’ve been teasing for months. With only 5-7 minutes of footage actually shown so far, there is a lot of the movie that we’ve yet to even catch a glimpse of. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige did previously mention that it is “somewhat accurate” that the marketing wouldn’t show any footage beyond the first 20 minutes of the film, which further highlights just how many spoilers they’re keeping under wraps.

With no intermission included or ever considered, this runtime guarantees that audiences will need to be prepared for a long moviegoing experience when they do check out Avengers: Endgame. What makes this runtime all the more impressive though, is that it doesn’t appear to be reducing interest or the film’s box office potential. Avengers: Endgame is still projected to have the highest opening weekend in history domestically and may shatter the worldwide opening record too.

Marvel and the Russos aren’t making a 3-hour film just for the sake of it either. This is likely the direct result of dealing with a dozen main characters and eleven years of history, all while trying to properly wrap up the Infinity Saga and set the stage for the future of the MCU as well. This will be no easy task to achieve, but the Russos believe Avengers: Endgame is their best work ever with Marvel, which is quite impressive if true.
