The Russo Brothers have explained the reason why Avengers: Endgame lacks a post-credits scene. The current MCU film is doing exceptionally well at the box office, grossing $1.2 billion in its opening weekend alone.
It can be argued that the MCU popularized the post-credits concept. In Iron Man, the Avengers were teased after the credits rolled. From there, fans anticipated what future event or storyline would be teased at the end of each movie. Although not all post-credits scenes teased a future movie (some were comedic based, such as the Captain America video at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming), most sought to make viewers excited for another film. To build anticipation for Endgame, Marvel officially released every post-credits scene, from Iron Man to Captain Marvel. Despite a 10-year tradition, Endgame lacks a post-credits scene.
As reported by Cinema Blend, the Russo Brothers held a Q&A in Washington D.C. after a screening of Endgame. Naturally, the topic of Endgame’s surprising lack of a post-credits scene teasing the future of the MCU came up. Anthony Russo took to the stage and gave a detailed explanation on the decision to not feature one.
In essence, what Anthony Russo is saying is that Endgame lacks a post-credits scene because the film serves as a conclusion to the story that began 11 years ago. Yes, Endgame does tease new developments for future films and the shows on Disney+, but it’s overall an ending to the current story.
The reason why there’s no end credits is because our goal on this movie was simply to bring to a conclusion the 22 movies now that comprise the MCU for these 10 years of storytelling. I think one of the great creative upsides for Joe and I, as story tellers on this movie, was that this is the first MCU movie we got to tell where we weren’t thinking about the future. We were simply thinking about the past, the journey that we’ve all been on together since that first Iron Man movie. And how do we bring the most epic sense of closure to that journey that we can possibly do. So that was our goal, and that was really why we had no tag.
For the first time, the Russo Brothers got to tell a story with an ending, rather than create with the future in mind. Captain America: The Winter Soldier re-introduced Hydra, which led to a long running storyline in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Captain America: Civil War affected almost every character dynamic. Finally, Avengers: Infinity War was the first part to Endgame. Endgame is the first film for the Russo Brothers to feature a definitive ending. The directing duo have no current plans to return to the MCU after Endgame, leaving their mark as the storytellers who brought the Infinity Saga to a close.
Avengers: Endgame may not be an overall perfect movie, but many fans agree that the climax and conclusion does a perfect job at bringing everything full circle. Interestingly, Kevin Feige said that Spider-Man: Far From Home is the final Phase 3 movie. Also, we’ll learn Marvel’s plans for Phase 4 after the release of Far From Home. The future of the MCU is bright, promising more stories to come.
