2017 may have only just begun, but fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are already gearing up for 2018. Once Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok hit theaters this year, it will be Black Panther and Ant-Man and the Wasp that get solo films in 2018. However, 2018 also contains Marvel’s most ambitious film to date: Avengers: Infinity War. The film was originally part one of a two part saga, but after removing the official title, Untitled Avengers is now set to wrap up Phase 3 and the MCU as we know it.

Director Joe and Anthony Russo are making the leap from the Captain America franchise to tackling the Avengers by directing both of the next two films uniting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes concurrently; a feat that will require over nine months of filming to accomplish. Well, their free time is now officially gone, with the directors themselves confirming reports that production on Infinity War begins today.

The Russo brothers took to Facebook to unveil an exclusive look at the Infinity War trailer - but not the kind that everybody is eager to see. Instead, the photo they posted is a simple, non-revealing shot of people’s trailers lined in a lot set aside for Infinity War personnel:

Since this photo does not do anything to reveal who could be on set with the Russos, it is largely unknown what exactly they could be filming today. That said, Pom Klementieff and Dave Bautista indicated they will be on set today, so the Russos could be using the first day of filming as a time to get to know the Guardians of the Galaxy team. There are a number of characters that the Russos have yet to direct that are set to appear in the next two Avengers movies, but none are as prominent as the Guardians.

If the Guardians are the center piece of the first day of production on Infinity War, that should not be an indicator that they will have the largest roles or be the first characters shown in the movie. It is important to remember how many moving parts Marvel Studios is working with, so the decisions as to who films when is a matter of logistics here, not “importance”. After all, Cumberbatch’s busy schedule could require them to use a Doctor Strange stand-in during some scenes, because he could not be on set with the rest of the actors.

Situations like these will be interesting to monitor throughout the next two Avengers movies’ production, as more characters are confirmed to appear, and also see who could get left out. As always, we’ll keep you posted!
