With a third Bad Boys movie on the way, the series is growing even more in the form of a TV spinoff titled LA’s Finest. Instead of focusing on Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s characters, it will center around Gabrielle Union’s character from Bad Boys II, as well as a brand new character in the franchise played by Jessica Alba.
In the original Bad Boys franchise, Smith and Lawrence star as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, respectively. Coupled with their comedically charged partnership, the two are tasked with taking on some of the city’s most dangerous drug cartels. In the sequel, Marcus’ sister Syd (Union) is embroiled in the plot, not only becoming romantically involved with Mike, but later revealing herself to be an undercover DEA operative. LA’s Finest will pursue a deeper dive into Syd’s storyline, following her to Los Angeles where she becomes an LAPD detective, is partnered up with Alba’s Nancy McKenna, and has to keep some personal secrets from getting in the way of her work. Though the two characters may not agree on most things, their anti-crime aspirations make them a perfect pair.
With a pilot episode written by Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier and directed by Anton Cropper (he also directed episodes of Suits, Black-ish), Deadline is reporting LA’s Finest was picked up for a 13-episode season by Canadian broadcaster Bell Media. Union and Alba will also executive produce the show and Sonnier, Margolis, Jerry Bruckheimer, Doug Belgrad, Jonathan Littman, KristieAnne Reed, Jeff Gaspin, and Jeff Morrone will produce.
Alongside LA’s Finest, Bell Media has also acquired a number of other series, including One Day She’ll Darken, which will star Chris Pine, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Killing Eve with Sandra Oh, and Chris Noth’s Gone. They’ve also acquired the latest series from the Russo Brothers (who have directed four movies in the MCU, including Avengers: Infinity War and next year’s Avengers 4) titled Deadly Class. Bell Media president of content and programming Mike Cosentino revealed his enthusiasm for the “powerful” lineup of shows that Bell Media acquired in an official statement.
LA’s Finest is being described as an “action-packed, character-driven drama,” but it’s fair to assume that the tone of the series will at least somewhat align with Bad Boys’ comedic flair. It’s also worth keeping in mind that even though the two main characters in the show are named Syd and Nancy, they likely don’t have too much in common with the turbulent punk-rocking couple of the same name.
