Diane Lane, who plays mom to Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent/Superman in the DCEU, defends the controversial “Save Martha!” line in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Lane, the Oscar-nominated actress who paired with Kevin Costner to play Martha and Jonathan Kent in Man of Steel and reprised her role for Batman V Superman, will be back in Justice League in November.
Lane, who is sworn not to reveal any details about Justice League, does want to weigh in, however, on the controversy over the Batman V Superman Martha moment, in which Superman says to Batman (Ben Affleck), “Find him! Save Martha!” The line, which some fans thought was divisive, gave Batman pause and made him pull back from jamming a Kryptonian spear into his foe because he was confused and angry, wondering why Superman would refer to his mother Martha’s name. What Batman didn’t know at the time was that Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) was holding Superman’s mom Martha hostage and threatening to kill her unless Superman took out the Caped Crusader.
In an interview with THR, Lane gave her reasoning behind why she thinks the line worked for the film. She says:
While Lane can’t talk about Justice League, she says one thing that won’t be happening in the film is a scene featuring Superman’s mom and Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), Aquaman’s (Jason Momoa) mother. About the dream pairing, Lane says: “I want a scene with Nicole, that’s what I really want. Perhaps in another [sequel]!”
“It’s the compassion for a man who’s lost his mother. When you understand the wound, you can work better with people.”
While Lane’s observation about the “Save Martha!” line will likely do little if anything to quell fans’ anger over the scene, it may come down to all parties in the debate over it to just agree to disagree. No matter how hard a filmmaker tries, no one – cast members, crew members or fans – will ever be 100 percent on the same page of any movie, comic book-inspired or otherwise.
Instead, fans may feel fortunate that the DCEU has attracted stars the caliber of Lane, and it’s hard to argue that she’s stellar in the small but pivotal role of Martha Kent in Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. You have to love how Lane presents Martha as a tough and sassy mom who is full of integrity – making her more than worthy of playing the adoptive mother of a Kryptonian alien. And judging from what she says about the “Save Martha!” controversy, Lane isn’t afraid to debate, either.
