Following the lifting of embargoes on reviews of director Zack Snyder’s hotly anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the critical consensus has been mixed to negative, despite the Warner Bros. production having broken pre-ticket sales for the superhero film genre and garnering positive word-of-mouth from some who have already seen the film in test screenings. Despite his better intentions in the making of his cataclysmic battle of two of the greatest denizens of the DC Extended Universe, Snyder and company will have quite the uphill battle to climb if they hope to overcome the backlash that their movie has received from the world’s film critics.

In terms of delivering a critical dud within the superhero genre, both of the film’s eponymous stars are no strangers to attracting acutely arched scrutiny and unwanted attention, with Henry Cavill’s preceding blockbuster film Man of Steel already of source of contention among fans of Snyder’s new series of adapted DC characters, and Ben Affleck’s brief turn as Marvel Comics’ Daredevil a fact better left alone in the annals of forgotten history. But that doesn’t mean that they are willing to take any negative reviews of Batman V Superman lying down, as can be attested in the latest interview with various members of the film’s cast.

In an interview with the film’s director and cast conducted by Yahoo! Movies, Cavill, Amy Adams, Zack Snyder, and Gal Gadot are quick to cite their own take on the derisive backlash that their film has quickly received over the course of the past couple of days. In the video featured above, Cavill makes his distinction between personal and objective opinions known in regards to the current movie reviewing establishment, stating:

“The interesting thing is that we get the critics who have their personal opinions. And the thing about personal opinions is that they always come from a place, and there’s a preconceived idea which you have to get past a critic before you start writing your article or your review, and that affects everything.”

All that being said, Cavill remains optimistic that fans will still find plenty love about the new movie, and claimed that, “What is really going to matter, I believe, is what the audience says.” The Son of Krypton’s statement on the importance of viewer opinion mattering more than what one person writes in subjective isolation was echoed by co-star Amy Adams, who plays Lois Lane once again in Snyder’s new film, who was also quick to derail the overriding tide of bad press. When asked for comment on the topic in question, Adams commented:

Whether or not the cast and crew is merely trying to save face and appear genial and concerned for the ultimate fate of their new professional venture might still be the case in the eyes of some moviegoers, though Snyder did add that, “I’m a comic book guy and I made the movie based as much as I could on that aesthetic,” and as such he doesn’t know how else to give his “100%” any other way. And with Gal Gadot voicing her own enthusiasm for the film as being a “Good movie,” it would appear that the cast and crew are prepared to stand behind the film.

“I know that Zack [Snyder] doesn’t make the movies, or none of us, are making the movies for the critics. You can’t go into it with that perspective. I know we really hope the fans like it and so far the reaction has been really positive on that front. If you’re interested in a film you should see it and form your own opinion rather than just going on the word of somebody [else].”

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will see theatrical release in the U.S. on March 25th, 2016, followed by Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman on June 23rd, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17th, 2017; The Flash on March 16th, 2018; Aquaman on July 27th, 2018; Shazam on April 5th, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14th, 2019; Cyborg on April 3rd, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps. on June 19th, 2020.
