This week all of the recent rumors and leaks about this year’s Call of Duty were confirmed to be the real deal as the official announcement trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was released by Activision. As previously reported, much of the latest game from developer Infinity Ward will indeed take part in space, taking the franchise places it has never been before, and even deeper in future.
Not only did the trailer showcase interstellar battles with spaceships but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered was also confirmed. The remake will only be part of a ‘Legacy’ edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, not sold separately, and some fans may actually be more excited by the return of the older game than getting their hands on the new one. At least a few gamers left unimpressed by the first look of Infinite Warfare just so happen to be currently working on the next Battlefield game…
Roland Smedberg is a Senior Video and Media Director/Editor at EA Dice and not long after Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s trailer landed, Smedberg tweeted out a series of posts describing exactly what he thought about the look of Infinity Ward’s upcoming game. He believes that the game looks like it is 10 years old and that the editing for the trailer (a skill of which he has 14 years’ worth of experience in) is grade school level. DICE Engineer Julian Manolov even joined in with the discussion citing that the video only showcased three and a half minutes of CG and he wondered where the real game was.
Most of the tweets have since been deleted although not before PlayStation Lifestyle managed to get a few screengrabs. Smedberg has even apologized for his remarks, recognizing that even though everyone is entitled to their opinion, there are more constructive ways of sharing them.
Smedberg has no doubt resumed with his busy work schedule, after all, his big week is far from over. He is currently working on a trailer of his own, that he has claimed will ‘melt the internet’. That trailer is expected to be for the next Battlefield game as the worldwide reveal will take place this Friday, May 6th. Electronic Arts and DICE should expect their own announcement trailer to be scrutinized even more than usual now.
“Managed to six years without utterly failing at Twitter. Last night I did…a stupid mistake and I apologize. Last couple of months my resting heart rate has been 62. Last 24 hours it’s been 85. Note to self, refrain from stupid and immature rants. There’s a way to spread your personal opinions and being immature and disrespectful are not it. My first, and last, slip up. Apologies.”
Call of Duty vs Battlefield debates are nothing new but this kind of rivalry is usually reserved strictly for fanboys only, even if it is amusing and even if the competition between studios are a great thing for the industry. Still, it’s bold for the Battlefield devs to take shots after Hardline failed miserably (even if it was primarily developed by another studio in Visceral Games), after Star Wars: Battlefront proved to be a shallow and lacking experience, and after their last main game, BF4, launched with server netcode issues and large amount of bugs.

Infinite Warfare will absolutely be compared to Battlefield 5 by players and discussions about which is the better FPS are standard, but both franchises have high expectations to meet. That applies especially to Infinity Ward whose last game Call of Duty: Ghosts was a disappointment and hurt sales for the series and its followup game, Advanced Warfare.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare releases November 4, 2016 while the Battlefield 5 World Premiere takes place May 6, 2016.
