In the final minutes of the latest episode of Batwoman, another character in Kate Kane’s (Ruby Rose) life discovers the secret identity of Gotham City’s new protector. The new Arrowverse drama has taken a slightly different approach compared to its sister shows when it comes to how many know of Batwoman’s real identity. Shows like The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl have a ton of characters who know about the leading heroes’ alter-egos. However, the Bat-centered series has so far been restricted by how many people know of Kate’s night activities. The first season has not really fleshed out Kate’s team beyond Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson), breaking away from the status quo of the other shows that have big teams for the main hero.
While characters like Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy) have been suspicious of Kate and Batwoman possibly being the same person, “Drink Me” ended up with a different series regular figuring it all out. Mary Hamilton (Nicole Kang) has slowly been getting more involved in Kate’s life since she returned to Gotham as the two step-sisters are beginning to flesh out their relationship. The thirteenth episode has Kate making it clear to Mary, unintentionally, that she isn’t the greatest liar as the Hamilton medical student/influencer sees right through her.
In “Drink Me”, Kate is dealing with DC villain Nocturna (Kayla Ewell) going after innocent people in Gotham for their blood due to her rare condition. One of her tools to capture her victims was by injecting them with ketamine. But as Batwoman tries to stop her, Nocturna ends up drugging Kate with ketamine during their first encounter. Despite being trapped at first, Kate makes it out of there after Sophie helps Batwoman out. During a check-up with Mary, they discover that Kate has ketamine in her system which Mary wonders how that even happened. But Kate makes up a story about how she got it through a crazy night of partying before taking off.
This is where Kate’s secret identity as Batwoman begins to fall apart. Later on in “Drink Me”, Mary finds out from Sophie that Batwoman had been drugged by Nocturna during their first clash. During the closing minutes of the episode, Mary is listening to Vesper Fairchild (Rachel Maddow) who is reporting about how Nocturna was using her dental implants to inject victims with ketamine. As Mary begins to crack the mystery, she remembers Sophie’s comment, Kate’s test results, and how Luke was running around with an earpiece earlier on. Mary goes to pick-up the CatCo Magazine cover of Batwoman coming out as homosexual before uttering that ‘Kate, you’re totally Batwoman!’ as the scene ends with her shocked.
What all of this goes to show is that Mary is not someone to underestimate as she picks up on every detail. The likeliest scenario to come out of this in upcoming episodes is Mary and Kate getting even closer. Having been saved by Batwoman and knowing that it was Kate this entire time; it’ll likely be the beginning of Mary joining the Bat-Family as Kate gains more allies around her. The episode synopsis for the 14th installment “Grinning From Ear to Ear” teases that Mary will be offering” her “expertise to assist Kate.” That could potentially foreshadow a scene between the two step-sisters where Kate finds out that Mary knows her secret. With the episode not airing until Sunday, March 8, it remains to be seen how Mary will process this information in the remainder of Batwoman season 1.
