Batwoman star Ruby Rose isn’t stressing too much about doing every stunt on her show after requiring surgery over the summer. Rose first took on the role of Batwoman for last year’s Arrowverse crossover, titled Elseworlds. In it, Arrow’s Oliver Queen, The Flash’s Barry Allen, and Supergirl’s Kara Danvers traveled to Gotham City. After running into trouble, they were rescued by Kate Kane, aka Batwoman. After the success of that first appearance, The CW order Batwoman to series this past May. Season 1 premiered earlier this month and has so far taken place prior to the Elseworlds crossover. Kate donned the iconic Batwoman suit with its red emblem and wig for the first time in the series’ most recent episode.
Batwoman made headlines just before its debut with the news that MSNBC host Rachel Maddow would play Vesper Fairchild. Maddow hasn’t appeared on-screen, instead providing voiceover for the fictional talk show personality. The first season of Batwoman has also been notable for confirming that several previously unmentioned DC characters exist in the Arrowverse. So far, the Joker, Wonder Woman, Robin, and the Riddler have all been referenced, usually in passing. Wonder Woman’s mention came courtesy of a joke in Batwoman’s second episode, where Kate teased former flame Sophie, “If I were going to save you in a dramatic fashion, I would totally dress as Wonder Woman.”
Like all of the Arrowverse shows, Batwoman relies heavily on stunts, leading Rose to need surgery on two herniated discs over the summer. In an interview with Variety at the Australians in Film Gala held Wednesday night, Rose spoke about her recovery and future stunt work. She explained, “I feel great. It’s been a couple of months now, so I’m moving around, I’m doing my thing. It’s good.” She also discussed her attitude toward stunts, saying, “Maybe I don’t have to do everything? Maybe there’s some that I can do once or twice…I think I’ve earned my stripes already.” Rose brought up her history with stunt work and elaborated, “I’ve done so many stunts in so many projects that I know that I have to relinquish the control sometimes.”
As Batwoman continues its first season, many fans are looking ahead to the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, which will involve characters from every DC show on The CW. Though Batwoman and Supergirl haven’t yet referenced the Crisis this season, it’s already heavily impacted Arrow and The Flash. Oliver spent the first two episodes of Arrow doing The Monitor’s bidding, hoping to stop the Crisis. Meanwhile, Barry and his wife, reporter Iris West-Allen, received a visit from The Monitor during the season premiere of The Flash. He warned Barry that he will die in the Crisis, which Barry finally shared with his team at Star Labs in this week’s episode.
Considering that every Arrowverse show has had a long and successful run, it’s likely Batwoman will follow suit and air for years to come. It’s smart of Rose to pace herself on stunts for the series, especially since she already has several years of stunt work under her belt. Batwoman’s fighting style is similar to Arrow’s, the other Arrowverse series with the most stunts its actors can feasibly perform. With any luck, Rose will continue to do stunts when she’s able, while also keeping herself healthy for Batwoman’s entire run.
