One of the silliest movies to look forward to next month is Baywatch, a big-screen remake of the iconic lifeguard series from the ’90s. Starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Zac Effron, and Priyanka Chopra, it looks like a raucous comedy that is going to be a whole lot of fun to usher in the summer.
One of the most appealing aspects of the new film is the self-referential humor in the trailers and posters so far, from the ‘Summer is Coming’ posters that spoof Game of Thrones, to poking fun at slo-mo. The latest promo shows fans plenty of the same – including a reminder to look at the lifeguards’ faces, not their chests!
The promo, posted by UK Paramount Pictures, is 23 seconds long and titled ‘Baes of the Bay’. It opens with the female characters doing one of the swimsuited slo-mo runs across the beach that the show was famous for, before asking “what is it you think we do here”?. What follows is a great montage of bikini bodies and the female characters throwing a lot of punches. The title cards read “Not your average baes”.
The promo is clearly making the point that while there are going to be lots of bikini-clad women in the film, they are much more than just eye candy. The focus on the women fighting and training the new recruits makes this point very clear, but just in case it wasn’t obvious enough, the final scene should make any Baywatch fan laugh; as Zac Effron is reminded to look “not here… here”.
‘Baes of the Bay’ has the same upbeat, self-referential tone as earlier trailers and promos, and it’s clear that this film is not afraid to make fun of the series that inspired it. Paramount is definitely steering into the skid with this remake, and the result is a really fresh and funny take on the cliches – at least, that is the impression from the trailers.
While this new promo is a lot of summery fun, it doesn’t do much to expand on what fans will already know about the movie. The full-length trailers have already laid out the basic plot clearly (lifeguards get involved in investigating crime, because that’s part of their responsibilities), and the cast members have all been revealed. This is simply another joke-filled few seconds to create hype for the film, and it does a fantastic job of it.
